Cote Baptist Chapel

The honey-coloured stone of Cote Baptist Chapel sits quietly on the edge of a small Oxfordshire village, about three miles south of Witney. It's a proper example of rural Nonconformist architecture - built in 1671, which makes it one of the oldest Baptist chapels in the country. The exterior is straightforward, almost austere, with tall sash windows and a simple gabled roof that speaks to the no-frills faith of its early congregation.

Inside, the layout is all about the pulpit. The wooden pews face centre stage, and you get a real sense of how Baptists worshipped differently from their Anglican neighbours - no elaborate decoration, no rood screen, just the Word and the community gathered to hear it. The plaster ceiling and period fittings have survived remarkably well.
