Corney Church

The little church sits alone on the fellside above Holmrook, and that's rather the point of it. You won't find Corney Church packed with tour groups or tourist information boards. What you get instead is a proper fell-side walk and a medieval stone building that's been standing here since goodness knows when, surrounded by moorland that rolls on for miles.

Inside, it's intimate and spare - whitewashed walls, dark wooden beams, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. The churchyard's worth a wander too, with old slate gravestones weathered nearly blank by centuries of Cumbrian weather. It's the walk that makes it, to be honest. Park near Holmrook and head up - the views back down the valley are excellent, and on a clear day you'll see right across to the coast.

This appeals most to walkers tackling the fells, or those wanting a quiet moment away from the Lake District tourist rush. Not a destination in itself, but a cracking addition to a day's hillside rambling. Allow an hour round trip from Holmrook if you're taking the walk at a decent pace.

If you're based at Fisherground Campsite - just six miles away - it's a morning sortie that won't eat into your park time. Free to visit, and you'll likely have the place to yourself. Go early to avoid anyone else getting the same idea.
