Corn Hill

The walk up Corn Hill rewards you with views across the rolling Dumfries and Galloway landscape that justify the short but proper climb. It's not a bruiser of a peak - more of a satisfying afternoon outing from Castle Douglas - and the summit gives you clear sightlines across farmland and forestry that stretch impressively on a decent day.

This is walker territory, plain and simple. Families with younger kids might find the ascent a bit of a slog for what amounts to a couple of hours' entertainment, though older children who enjoy a genuine walk will get something out of it. History buffs won't find much to sink their teeth into up here - it's about the walk itself and the reward at the top, not about what happened on this particular hillside.

You'll want to allow a good two hours there and back, possibly longer if you're the sort who dawdles to take photos or sit with a flask. The ground can be boggy after rain, so proper boots are worth the bother. Free to access, naturally - just turn up and get going.

If you're staying at one of the local caravan parks - Mollance Farm is closest, just over a mile away - Corn Hill makes for a solid break from site-based activities. Combine it with a poke around Castle Douglas itself for a proper day out, or link it with other Lowland walks in the area. It's the kind of walk that reminds you why people bother with Scotland's hills at all.
