Corkscrew Hill

The road up Corkscrew Hill twists like its name suggests, hairpin after hairpin climbing out of the Totnes valley. It's the sort of steep Devon lane that makes you grip the wheel a bit tighter, with high hedges pressing in from both sides. Once you reach the top, you get proper views across the South Hams - rolling farmland, distant tree lines, and on a clear day, enough perspective to understand why this corner of Devon appeals to people who actually live here rather than just passing through.

There's no visitor centre or car park infrastructure to speak of - it's genuinely just a vantage point. You stop, you look, you either stay for five minutes or you don't. Walkers find it useful as a waypoint rather than a destination in itself, and the real value comes if you're cycling the area, where tackling that climb gives you decent bragging rights.

Staying at one of the nearby parks - Whitehill Country Park and Hoburne Devon Bay are both within easy reach - this makes a decent leg-stretch during a touring holiday. It's not somewhere that'll eat up an afternoon, but it slots well into a morning drive from Totnes. The hill itself is free, obviously, and you could cover it in twenty minutes if you're just stopping for the view. Worth the detour if you're already in the area; not worth planning a trip around.
