About Corinthian Temple

The Corinthian Temple stands on the edge of Barnsley like something that's wandered in from the Cotswolds and decided to stay put. It's a proper classical folly - all fluted columns and stone precision - built back in the 18th century and now surprisingly well-maintained for a structure that's frankly in the middle of nowhere in South Yorkshire.

You get the full classical experience here: six Corinthian columns supporting a domed roof, the sort of thing that makes you understand why the Georgians got a bit obsessed with ancient Rome. The setting matters too - it's positioned on higher ground, which gives you decent views across the surrounding parkland and makes you appreciate why someone with money and taste decided to plonk it here.

This is more for architecture enthusiasts and walkers than small children, though it's handsome enough that families doing the route between Boots and Bubbles glamping or Ingfield Farm won't regret the detour. You're looking at maybe 20 minutes here unless you're the sort who sketches columns. Bring a camera - the light works particularly well in late afternoon.

The real appeal is that it hasn't been Disney-fied or turned into a cafe. You simply turn up, look at it, and enjoy the fact that someone 300 years ago thought this corner of Yorkshire was worth immortalising in stone. That's rather lovely, actually.
