Corbridge Roman Bridge (Site of)

The River Tyne at Corbridge doesn't look like much on first glance, but underneath that water lies one of the most strategically important military installations the Romans built in Britain. What remains visible today are the substantial stone piers of a bridge that once connected Hadrian's Wall to the supply routes running south - the engineering alone tells you how seriously Rome took controlling this stretch of Northumberland.

You won't find a dramatic ruin here. It's more about standing on the bank and appreciating the clever positioning rather than gawping at towering arches. The Roman fort at Corbridge sits just up from the bridge site, and walking between the two gives you a proper sense of how the garrison operated. History buffs will find this genuinely absorbing; families with young children might struggle to hold their attention for more than 20 minutes unless you're good at storytelling.

The village of Corbridge itself is pleasant enough for a quick poke around, and you're within easy reach of Newcastle. The walk along the Tyne Valley here is decent, and if the weather's decent, it's the kind of spot where you can kill an hour without feeling you've wasted the effort.
