Corbie Craigs Pit No1

The pit itself is barely visible now, which is probably why most people driving through South Ayrshire miss it entirely. Corbie Craigs Pit No1 is what remains of an Iron Age settlement, and standing here you're looking at evidence of people who lived roughly 2,000 years ago. There's not much to see in the way of structures - it's more about understanding what was here: a defensive settlement, possibly a fort, with traces of fortifications that would have dominated the landscape back then.

History types will find themselves studying the ground, imagining the defensive ditches and ramparts that once made this place significant. For most families, though, it's probably a quick stop rather than a destination in itself - ten minutes to have a look around, take a photo, move on. The real appeal is less about what you can see and more about what you know was here, so come prepared with some background reading if you want to get the most from it.

Maybole is the nearest town, making this a natural add-on if you're already in South Ayrshire exploring the area.
