Coploe Hill

The walk up Coploe Hill from Royston doesn't take long, but it's deceptively rewarding. You're climbing Essex's highest point here - all 482 feet of it - which sounds modest until you realise how flat everything else around you actually is. The summit gives you proper views across three counties on a clear day, rolling farmland stretching out in every direction.

It's a straightforward walk, maybe twenty minutes up from the car park, and the path is well-trodden. No scrambling required. You'll see why locals rate this spot - it's one of the few places in the southeast where you can stand high enough to actually see distance. The views aren't dramatic in an Alpine sense, but there's something satisfying about seeing your corner of England laid out like that.

Walkers will get the most from this, though families with decent boot-wearing kids won't struggle. It's the sort of place you do in an hour round trip, so don't expect a full day's outing. Free to visit, naturally. The nearest proper base is Royston, a decent market town with reasonable facilities. If you're staying at Pightle Farm Campsite nearby, this makes an easy morning expedition before heading out to bigger attractions elsewhere. On its own it's a quick leg-stretch; as part of a broader Essex ramble it works well enough.
