Cook's Pond

The water at Cook's Pond sits perfectly still most mornings, reflecting the Hampshire sky like dark glass. It's a proper working landscape - not some manicured beauty spot - with a genuine rural feel that you don't get everywhere these days.

This is a lake that rewards a slow walk round rather than a quick photo stop. The water itself is the main draw, and on a decent day it's genuinely peaceful. You'll spot waterfowl, maybe catch fishermen if you're lucky, and the surrounding landscape gives you that sense of being away from it all without actually being anywhere difficult to reach from Petersfield.

Walkers will get more from it than most. There's enough of a circuit to make it feel like proper exercise, not just a stroll. It's the kind of place where an hour becomes two hours without you noticing. Families with young kids might find it a touch quiet - there's no playground or facilities that I could see, so managing expectations matters.

If you're based at Adhurst Yurts just down the road, it's absolutely worth adding to your itinerary. The contrast between a night in a yurt with artisan activities and a morning walk round the pond actually works rather well. You get that mix of doing something and being somewhere.

Free to visit, clearly. No facilities that I'm aware of, so bring what you need. Best visited when the light's low - either early morning or late afternoon.
