Conningbrook Lakes Country Park

Two lakes surrounded by woodland and meadow - that's the core of Conningbrook, just outside Ashford. What makes it worth the drive is how quietly pleasant it all is. You get proper walking trails that loop round both water bodies, reed beds thick with birdlife, and enough open space that you won't feel cramped even on a weekend.

It's ideal for walkers and birders, though families with younger kids won't find theme park excitement here - this is about pace and fresh air rather than activities. Allow two to three hours for a full loop, depending on how often you stop to watch what's on the water. Bring binoculars if you're any good at spotting things. The paths are flat and well-maintained, no scrambling required.

The reserve is free to access, which counts heavily in its favour. Spring is magnificent for migrants and breeding birds, but autumn has its own appeal with the vegetation changing colour reflected in the lakes. Summer brings dragonflies and families of waterfowl, though it can get muggy near the reed beds.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan sites - Broadhembury is particularly well-rated and less than four miles away - this makes a solid morning or afternoon outing. It's not dramatic or Instagram-famous, but that's rather the point. You come here to actually notice things rather than rush through checking boxes.
