Conningbrook "Eco" Lake

Conningbrook Lake sits just outside Ashford like a proper surprise - a 44-acre freshwater reservoir that's been transformed into something genuinely worth a detour. It's become a focal point for the town, with walking paths ringing the water, fishing spots for those who can't help themselves, and enough open space to let kids run about without worrying they'll disappear into the undergrowth.

The lake itself is the draw. On a decent day the water reflects the sky nicely, and you get proper views across to the surrounding countryside. There's a visitor centre with facilities, and the walking route around the perimeter takes a good hour at an easy pace - flat enough for pushchairs, interesting enough that you won't just be staring at the ground. Birdwatchers come here regularly; you'll spot waterfowl even if you're not specifically looking.

It works best for families wanting a gentle walk or a spot of lakeside time without the fuss of coastal crowds. If you're staying at Dunn Street Farm Campsite or Broadhembury Caravan Park - both within four miles - it's an easy morning or late-afternoon outing. The surrounding area around Ashford has enough other bits to keep you occupied, but the lake itself is a calm, low-key place rather than a destination that'll occupy your whole day.
