Compton Lock

The River Itchen flows through this stretch of Hampshire countryside with a quiet insistence that makes you forget Winchester is only a few miles away. Compton Lock itself is a working weir - nothing grand, just functional Victorian engineering that's been doing its job for over a century. What draws people here is the nature reserve surrounding it, where the riverbanks have been left to do their thing, and if you're lucky with the light and the season, you'll spot kingfishers, herons, and the occasional otter sliding through the water.

Walkers get the most from this spot. There's a pleasant riverside path that doesn't demand much but rewards you with proper countryside quiet - no crowds, no gift shops. Allow 45 minutes to an hour for a decent wander, longer if you're into bird spotting and prepared to stand still for it. The path is accessible enough for most fitness levels, though it can get muddy after rain. You're looking at free access, which is rare enough to appreciate.

It works well as a morning excursion if you're based at any of the nearby caravan sites - Holden Farm (5.3 miles) gets top marks for facilities and is only a short drive. The combination of Winchester's high street charm with this quiet riverside reserve gives you a proper balanced day: history and heritage in town, then fresh air and water birds out here. Best visited in spring or autumn when the light's golden and you're not battling midges.
