Common Hill

Common Hill isn't going to blow your mind, but it's a decent walk if you're staying near Chippenham and fancy stretching your legs. The summit sits at a modest elevation - nothing dramatic, but high enough to offer proper views across the Wiltshire countryside when the weather's on your side. On a clear day you can see for miles. On a grey one, well, you get trees.

It's a straightforward walk from the surrounding area, popular with locals who know it exists. The terrain's manageable for families with older kids, though younger ones might find it a bit of a slog depending on which approach you take. Walkers will appreciate it as part of a longer circuit rather than a destination in itself. There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - no café, no gift shop, no crowds - which is either brilliant or boring depending on your mood.

Free to access, obviously. You're climbing a hill. Allow an hour or two depending on your pace and whether you fancy a proper circuit. Spring and autumn are your best bets weatherwise.

If you're based at one of the caravan sites within a few miles - Plough Lane, The Moors, or Roe Deer Fields - it's a useful nearby option for breaking up a park-based holiday. Pair it with exploring Chippenham's high street or heading further afield. It's practical rather than unmissable, but then again, that's rather the point of a Wiltshire walk.
