Common Hill

The walk up Common Hill near Cirencester rewards you with proper views across the Cotswolds - nothing dramatic, but on a clear day you can see for miles across rolling farmland and woodland. It's the sort of place locals know well and visitors often miss, which is rather the point.

The hill itself is modest in height but the ascent takes you through mixed countryside that feels genuinely peaceful. You're walking through proper Cotswold landscape here - dry stone walls, sheep scattered across fields, that golden-stone distant farmhouses. The top is open grassland, good for sitting down with a flask and letting your legs recover.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a dramatic scramble or a challenging peak, so don't come expecting Alpine theatrics. Instead, you get a straightforward country walk with a genuine sense of arrival. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the walk back down tedious. Allow a couple of hours including a proper stop at the top.

If you're based at one of the local holiday parks - Hoburne Cotswold is the closest at just over two miles away - this works as a morning excursion before heading into Cirencester for lunch. It pairs well with the quieter side of Cotswolds hiking, away from the overcrowded honey-pot villages. Free to visit, naturally. Best tackled in spring or autumn when you're not melting on the way up.
