Combs Head - North West Top

The walk up to Combs Head's North West Top from Buxton isn't a gentle stroll - it's a proper leg-burner that rewards you with views across the High Peak that make the climb feel worthwhile. You're looking at moorland terrain, exposed ridges, and on a clear day you can see for miles across Derbyshire's best bits.

This is absolutely walker country. The terrain's rough underfoot, the wind can be brutal up there, and you'll need decent boots and weather sense. It's not somewhere to wander up in trainers expecting a quick jaunt. Families with young kids would struggle; teenagers with some hiking experience would probably enjoy it. History buffs get less out of this one than they would from a proper heritage site - it's about the landscape, the achievement, and the views rather than stories.

Start early, check the forecast first, and allow three to four hours return depending on your pace and which route you take from Buxton. The whole thing's free and always accessible - no gates, no fees, no faff. If you're staying at one of the caravan parks near Buxton, this makes a solid day out. Lime Tree Holiday Park and Buxton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite are both close enough that you could tackle it without much drive time.

It's not a destination peak in the way Kinder Scout is, but if you're serious about walking and you're based nearby, it's absolutely worth the effort. Go on a decent day though - this isn't one for drizzle and low cloud.
