Combs Head

The walk up Combs Head from Buxton takes you through proper Peak District terrain - steep in places, moorland views that open up as you climb. It's not the most famous peak around here, which means you won't fight crowds on the approach path. The summit itself isn't dramatic, no rocky outcrop or trig point theatre, just moorland rolling away in all directions. But that's rather the point.

This is a walk for people who like their peaks straightforward. No scrambling, no technical bits - just a good leg workout and the kind of views that remind you why the Dark Peak exists. Allow two to three hours for a round trip from Buxton town centre. Best done on a clear day when the moorland colour actually shows itself rather than disappearing into cloud.

If you're camped at Buxton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or one of the other parks nearby - Lime Tree Holiday Park or Beech Croft Farm are all within easy striking distance - Combs Head works well as a morning outing before heading elsewhere in the park area. It's not dramatic enough to plan a trip around alone, but combine it with Mam Tor or Lose Hill nearby and you've got a solid day in the hills. Walkers with decent fitness will get the most from it. Young kids might find the moorland a bit bleak and featureless for their taste.
