Colwick Woods Local Nature Reserve

The woods sprawl across a proper chunk of land just outside Nottingham, and what makes them special is how accessible they are without feeling trampled. You're walking through mixed woodland - oak, ash, and birch mostly - with a network of paths that don't require proper hiking boots or an Ordnance Survey map. The reserve sits on the River Trent's floodplain, which means in wetter months the paths get boggy but the birdwatching improves considerably. In spring, the bluebells are worth planning around.

This is a walkers' reserve first and foremost. You won't find visitor centres or cafe stops, so bring a flask if you want one. The paths are well-marked enough, though a bit muddy in places, and most people potter around for an hour or two rather than make a full day of it. It's also decent for families with kids who can manage uneven ground - there's wildlife to spot without needing to sit still for hours.

Free access, as far as I can tell, and there's parking nearby. If you're based at one of the caravan parks dotted around - Shelford Nurseries is closest at under four miles, or Peacock Lake and Gunthorpe both work well - this makes a solid morning out before heading back for lunch. Worth combining with a walk along the Trent itself rather than treating it as a standalone trip. It's the sort of place that repays returning to across different seasons rather than expecting everything to happen in one visit.
