Colwick Marina

The River Trent winds through Nottinghamshire with a particular charm around Colwick, where a former gravel pit has transformed into something rather special - a proper nature reserve that locals actually use instead of just walking past. The marina sits alongside the water, and the whole stretch works brilliantly for spotting waterfowl, particularly in autumn and winter when the resident populations swell with visiting birds. You'll see cormorants diving, grebes bobbing about, and if you're lucky, kingfishers flashing past in that electric blue way they do.

The appeal here depends entirely on what you're after. Birdwatchers will lose hours tracing movement through the reeds and across the open water. Casual walkers find it decent for a flat, straightforward route without the rigmarole of major attractions. Kids get bored after about forty minutes unless they're genuinely into spotting things - bring binoculars if they are, it genuinely transforms the visit.

Getting here from Nottingham takes barely ten minutes, which makes it ideal padding between your accommodation at Birdholme or Peacock Lake Glamping and something with more obvious appeal. The reserve is free to access, and you can walk at your own pace - no set route, no ticket office nonsense. Best visited early morning when birds are most active and you'll have the place to yourself. Bring a decent pair of binoculars and perhaps a bird identification guide. It's uncomplicated in the best way.
