Gedling Country Park

The grounds at Gedling spread across enough space that you can actually lose an hour without trying. It's a proper country park on Nottingham's doorstep - the sort of place locals know well but visitors often skip over. Walking trails wind through woodland and open pasture, and there's a decent sized lake that draws the occasional fisherman and plenty of families with ducks to feed.

What makes it work is the simplicity. No theme park nonsense, no entry fees to worry about, just open space and air. The paths are well-maintained enough for buggies, though some stretches get muddy after rain. Kids will manage an hour or so exploring the water's edge before demanding to go home, though if you've brought a picnic and a ball, they might stretch it to two hours without complaint.

The park sits close enough to Nottingham that it's an easy morning or afternoon stop if you're based at one of the caravan sites within a few miles - Holme Pierrepont Campsite and Nottingham Camping and Caravanning Club Site are both within walking distance if you're feeling keen. It's the sort of place that slots nicely into a broader day out rather than being the main event. Go on a weekday morning and you'll have it virtually to yourself. Weekends get busier, especially when the weather's decent, but it never feels rammed.
