Column of the Temple of Poseidon at Chatsworth

Three massive stone columns stand guard in Chatsworth's sculpture gallery, remnants of an ancient Greek temple that once overlooked the Aegean Sea. The Duke of Devonshire's ancestors had quite the eye for classical antiquities, and this fragment of the Temple of Poseidon is arguably their finest acquisition. Each column towers overhead, weathered by centuries but still imposing enough to make you crane your neck.

History buffs will be absolutely captivated by the provenance - these aren't replicas but genuine pieces from the god of the sea's own sanctuary. The marble has that particular honey-coloured patina that only comes with serious age. You can still make out the intricate carved details despite millennia of Mediterranean weather followed by Derbyshire dampness.

Chatsworth's sculpture gallery tends to be quieter than the main state rooms, making this a lovely spot to linger without crowds. The columns work brilliantly as part of a longer house visit rather than a standalone attraction. Most visitors whip past in five minutes, but give it quarter of an hour to properly appreciate the craftsmanship.
