About Columbia Park
It's the kind of place that rewards a slow morning. Bring binoculars if you've got them. Winter brings wildfowl in serious numbers; spring and summer see the warblers move in. The walks are gentle, mostly flat, and you can knock out a decent circuit in ninety minutes without breaking a sweat. Kids old enough to use binoculars will find it genuinely engaging - there's usually something moving in the reeds - but very small ones might get restless if the light's wrong and the birds aren't cooperating.
Don't expect a visitor centre or car park with facilities. This is functional conservation land, and that's rather the point. Free to access, as far as I could establish, though do check before you go as these things change.
If you're based at Muswell Manor or Central Beach, both within five miles, Columbia Park makes an excellent morning detour before heading into Whitstable proper for lunch. The reserve works best with a tide table and some patience - go early, go quietly, and you'll see what the place is actually for.
