Thirty Nine Whitstable

Walk down Whitstable's High Street and you'll spot the blue plaque marking number 39 - the birthplace of Peter Cushing, the actor who terrified generations as Dracula and Grand Moff Tarkin. It's a modest Victorian terraced house, nothing particularly grand from the outside, but film buffs find it genuinely worth pausing for.

You can't go inside; this is strictly a passing landmark rather than a full attraction. The plaque itself is the point - a moment to acknowledge that one of British cinema's most commanding presences started life in this ordinary Kent seaside town. Cushing spent only his early years here before his family moved on, but the connection remains.

It works best as part of a proper wander through Whitstable's centre. The town itself has plenty to occupy you - the harbour, the beach, decent cafes and restaurants - so you're not making a special trip just for this. Film enthusiasts will enjoy the moment; casual tourists might miss it entirely and that's fine.

If you're staying at Seasalter Holiday Park or Seaview Holiday Park, both just over two miles away, it's an easy walk into town. Throw in a visit to the nearby Whitstable Castle or a stroll along the beach and you've got a decent afternoon sorted. Go mid-week if you can - weekends bring crowds and parking becomes tedious. The plaque's been there since 1998, so it's not going anywhere.
