Collith Haw Hill

The walk up Collith Haw Hill rewards you with proper views across Morecambe Bay - the kind of vista that makes the Lake District feel genuinely vast. It's not a slog either, which means families with younger legs won't spend the whole outing complaining. The peak itself sits above Ulverston, and on a clear day you can pick out the distinctive shape of the Piel Castle ruins across the water.

This is a straightforward fell walk rather than anything technical. You're looking at maybe an hour and a half up and back depending on fitness, so it slots nicely into a morning before lunch or an afternoon activity. The terrain's nothing dramatic - moorland and grass mostly - which makes it accessible without being boring. Local walkers rate it highly because it avoids the queues you'll find on more famous peaks nearby.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks round here - Hill of Oaks is closest at just over four miles away - Collith Haw works brilliantly as a leg-stretcher during a Lake District week. It's close enough to Windermere and the major attractions that you could do it without making it the centrepiece of your day. That said, it's worth going up for the view rather than treating it like a box-tick. The panorama across the bay genuinely justifies the walk.
