The reserve works best for birdwatchers and anyone after a gentle ramble without the full commitment of a serious hike. Families with older kids will find it decent enough; younger ones might tire quickly unless they're properly into spotting things with binoculars. Allow a couple of hours maximum if you're being thorough, less if you just fancy a walk-through.

Both make solid bases if you're planning a week on the water.

Go in winter or early spring when migration brings proper numbers of birds through. Summer can feel a bit quiet, honestly. The ground can get waterlogged after rain, so decent boots aren't optional.
