Coldwell Head Plantation

You'll find yourself walking under proper old conifers at Coldwell Head Plantation, a decent woodland patch just outside York where the trees grow thick enough to block out most of the sky. It's the sort of place where the light filters through in columns and everything smells of pine and damp earth. The plantation isn't vast - you're looking at a solid hour's walk if you take your time - but it's the kind of forest that feels bigger than it is because the canopy does all the heavy lifting.

Walkers get the most from this. There are tracks through the trees, muddy in places, and you can lose yourself without actually getting lost. Kids will enjoy it for a bit, though it's not a destination that'll keep them entertained all afternoon - there's no cafe, no playground, no obvious reason to stay beyond the walk itself. The floor is soft with needles and fallen branches, which is lovely underfoot, and on a grey Yorkshire day it's exactly what you need.

It's free to access and there's no official opening hours nonsense, so you can turn up whenever. Spring and early summer are best - less mud, better light. In winter the place turns properly dark and you'll want to be out well before dusk. If you're staying at Cawood Park or York South Ltd just down the road, it's easily combined with other forest walks in the area. Nothing revolutionary, but a genuine bit of woodland that doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't.
