Coldham Woods

The woodland trails at Coldham Woods deliver proper stretches of walking without the crowds you'd fight at more famous Kent beauty spots. Ancient beech and oak tower overhead, creating that cathedral-like quiet that makes you forget you're only a short drive from civilisation.

Walkers will find themselves genuinely absorbed here. The ground underfoot varies from firm packed earth to softer leaf litter, depending on the season and recent rainfall. It's not a quick stroll - allow a good two hours if you want to see what the woods actually offer rather than just skimming the perimeter. Families with young kids can manage shorter sections without feeling like they've missed the point, though expect at least one moaning session around the halfway mark.

The woods work brilliantly as a half-day stop between the glamping sites dotted around the area. Longberry Farm Glamping is only three miles away if you're after somewhere to base yourself, while Wildside Camping and Glamping sits just beyond that. Neither will eat into a whole afternoon if the weather turns - duck back to Coldham Woods, get some air, then return for a proper meal at camp.

Bring proper footwear. The undergrowth can be dense in places, and you'll want grip rather than style. Early morning or late afternoon visits tend to feel less used, which matters if you're after that genuine wilderness feeling. No visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared.
