Cold Overton Park Wood

The woodland walk here is proper quiet - the kind of place where you'll actually hear birdsong instead of your own footsteps echoing back at you. Cold Overton Park Wood sits just outside Oakham and feels like one of those corners of Rutland that most people drive straight past without noticing.

It's straightforward stuff: woodland paths, mixed trees, the occasional clearing where light pours through the canopy. Nothing dramatic, but that's precisely the appeal. You won't find dramatic vistas or Instagram moments here - what you get instead is space to breathe and think. The paths are fairly gentle, so it works well for families with younger kids, though they might get restless after 45 minutes or so if they're not the type to spot woodland creatures.

Historically minded visitors will find less to grip onto than at some other Rutland attractions, but walkers after a solid hour's ramble with minimal navigation headaches will do well enough. Bring decent boots if it's been wet - the ground can be boggy in patches.

With Greendale Farm Caravan & Camping Park less than three miles away, this makes an easy morning walk before heading to whatever else you've got planned. Emily's Cut is slightly further out if you're staying there. Neither location is particularly remote, so popping here between other pursuits works better than making it your main event. Free access, no crowds - that's the trade-off.
