Coedmore

The woodland around Coedmore, just outside Cardigan, is proper walking territory - the sort of place you'd find yourself getting properly lost in if you weren't paying attention to the path. It's mixed deciduous forest, which means spring brings bluebells thick enough to photograph without trying, and autumn turns the whole thing into a copper-coloured mess that's worth the muddy boots.

There's a decent network of trails threading through here, ranging from gentle loops you could do with a pushchair to proper woodland walks that'll take the better part of a morning. The forest itself does what forests do - provides shelter, shade, and the kind of quiet that makes towns feel very far away. Birdwatching types will find plenty to occupy themselves, and if you're the sort who just wants to walk and think, this is the place.

You won't find facilities - no café, no visitor centre, no marked routes with interpretive boards. It's free and straightforward: turn up, park (if there's a car park - best to ring ahead or ask in Cardigan), walk. Allow between one and three hours depending on how thorough you want to be.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Cardigan Camping is closest, about a mile away - this makes an easy morning outing before heading to the coast. It's not dramatic like the cliffs further west, but it's useful, underfussed, and does what it says on the tin.
