Coed y Meibion

Walking into Coed y Meibion feels like stepping properly off the beaten track. This forest sits just inland from Abergele on the North Wales coast, and it's the sort of place locals know about but most visitors miss entirely. The woodland is dense and atmospheric - conifers mixed with broadleaves create a cathedral-like canopy, and the paths wind through quiet glades where you'll hear more birdsong than people.

It's excellent for walkers who want something low-key without the crowds you'd find at bigger forest parks. Children enjoy it too - there's space to run about and the trails aren't technically demanding, though some sections can be muddy after rain. You're looking at maybe 45 minutes to two hours depending on which loops you take. Best to go mid-week if possible; weekends can get busy with local dog walkers.

The forest is free to access, which makes it a brilliant option if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - The Beach is closest at just over four miles away, or Plas Farm if you want something rated five-star. Either makes Coed y Meibion a proper addition to a coastal holiday without eating into your budget.

The terrain is manageable but can be waterlogged in winter. Spring and autumn are ideal - the light filtering through the trees is lovely without the summer heat and humidity that can make woodland feel oppressive. Bring decent walking boots rather than trainers.
