Coed y Brain

Dense woodland stretches across these hillsides just outside Welshpool, offering proper walking territory for those who fancy getting off the beaten track. Coed y Brain translates roughly as 'crow wood', and you'll understand why when you hear the constant cawing echoing through the canopy.

The forest paths wind through mixed deciduous and coniferous sections, with enough variety to keep dedicated ramblers interested for a good couple of hours. Families with older children will find it manageable, though the terrain can get muddy after rain and some routes are fairly steep. Younger kids might struggle with the longer loops.

What makes this spot worthwhile is its proximity to several holiday parks around Welshpool - you're looking at under half an hour's drive from places like Gwernydd Hall or Brook Valley Glamping. It's the sort of place that works brilliantly as a morning expedition before heading back to base for lunch.

Best visited on drier days when the paths aren't slippery. The forest feels properly wild in places, which means limited facilities, so come prepared with decent footwear and water.
