Coed Llwyn Onn

The woodland here is proper dense - towering conifers and broadleaf trees that block out most of the sky, creating this cool, sheltered pocket even on warm days. Coed Llwyn Onn is a nature reserve that rewards slow walking rather than rushing through. You'll find paths winding between the trees, though they're not always obvious, so a decent map helps.

It's the sort of place where walkers and nature enthusiasts actually get something out of it - bird watchers especially, since the tree cover attracts woodland species. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming for more than an hour unless they're keen on spotting wildlife. The ground can be boggy after rain, so proper footwear matters.

Llanfairpwll (yes, that's the short version of the name) is your nearest base, and from there the reserve feels properly tucked away - not a tourist trap, which is refreshing. If you're camping at one of the nearby parks like Plas Gwyn or Riverside Camping, it's close enough for a morning ramble before heading elsewhere. Don't expect facilities or signage - this is working woodland, not a manicured visitor attraction.

Go if you want quiet and trees. Skip it if you need paths that are obvious or views that punch you in the face. It's best visited in spring or early summer when the woodland is alive with birds.
