Coed Gwastad

Coed Gwastad is a proper working forest just outside Cardigan where you can actually walk without feeling herded. The trees - mostly conifers mixed with deciduous woodland - create that real forest atmosphere, and the paths are well-maintained enough that you won't spend the whole time watching your feet. It's free to access, which is refreshing, and there's no nonsense about booking or entry fees.

This is a walker's forest, straightforward. You get decent woodland trails ranging from gentle loops to longer stretches that'll work up a sweat. The main appeal is the quiet - you won't battle crowds here like you would at some of the more touristy spots in Pembrokeshire. Kids will enjoy it for an hour or so, though there's nothing fancy in terms of facilities or themed walks, so don't expect them to be entertained all day. Families camped at Cardigan Camping and Touring Caravan Site - just 2.4 miles away - could easily pop over for a morning or afternoon ramble.

Timing-wise, spring and early summer work best when the undergrowth isn't choking the paths, though autumn's decent too if you don't mind the mud. You'll want a good hour minimum, but two hours lets you actually breathe and enjoy it properly. There's no visitor centre or café, so bring what you need. It fits well with a Pembrokeshire camping break - you're close to Cardigan's coast and the other spots like Happy Campers and Mwnt Camping are within striking distance if you want to mix forest walks with beach time.
