Coed Bodtegwal

The moment you step into Coed Bodtegwal, you realise why locals keep quiet about it. This forest sits just outside Abergele on the Conwy coast, and it's the sort of place that feels genuinely wild - proper woodland rather than a manicured country park. Ancient trees crowd in from all sides, the ground's thick with moss and ferns, and there's actual peace here. You won't find crowds or visitor centres or branded signage. Just trails winding through genuine forest, some steep enough to get the heart going, others gentle enough for a leisurely amble.

It's ideal for anyone after proper woodland walking rather than a quick loop. Families with restless kids might find an hour enough before they're ready for something with more structure, but serious walkers could easily spend half a day here, especially if you're exploring the network properly. The forest works brilliantly as a break from the coast if you're staying at one of the nearby parks - The Beach Caravan Park and Bron-y-Wendon Holiday Park are both within easy driving distance, as is the excellent Plas Farm Caravan & Lodge Park up the valley. After a morning in the trees, you're ten minutes from Abergele's seafront or the wider Conwy attractions.

Bring proper boots - it gets muddy, especially after rain. There's no charge and no visitor infrastructure that we could find, which is part of its charm. Spring and autumn are particularly good, when you can actually see through the canopy without getting absolutely bitten to pieces. Winter's fine too if you don't mind damp.
