Coed Bach Park Wood

A proper woodland walk without the crowds you'll find at the bigger South Wales forests. Coed Bach Park Wood sits just outside Llanelli and delivers exactly what it says on the tin - ancient trees, damp earth underfoot, and enough quiet to actually hear yourself think. The canopy's thick enough that even on drizzly days (and there are plenty in Carmarthenshire) you stay reasonably dry.

What makes it work is the size. It's manageable in an afternoon without feeling rushed, so families with younger kids won't lose them before lunchtime. Walkers after something genuinely restorative rather than Instagram-famous will appreciate the lack of facilities - bring a flask, wear proper boots, and go. The woodland floor's uneven in places, so pushing a buggy here would be tedious.

This is the kind of spot that pairs well with a few days at one of the nearby touring parks. South Wales Touring Park and River View Touring Park are both just a couple of miles off, so you could easily knock out a morning woodland ramble before heading back for lunch. Black Ewe Glamping's a touch further but worth knowing about if you want something with a hot tub after a day in the damp.

Timing-wise, spring's lovely for bluebells, autumn equally good for the colour, though winter's honestly when it feels most atmospheric - fewer visitors, that deep quiet you get in bare woods. Go early if you can. Free to access, naturally. Allow two to three hours depending on pace and how often you stop to admire moss.
