Cockpit

The Cockpit is a proper woodland walk just outside Stockton-on-Tees, the kind of place locals know about but visitors often miss. It's a forested valley with footpaths running through dense trees and along a stream - nothing fancy, but genuinely peaceful for County Durham.

You'll spend your time wandering between the trees, crossing the water on small bridges, and following well-trodden trails. The paths are reasonably maintained though muddy in wet weather. It works best for walkers who prefer woodland to moorland, and families with young kids will find it manageable - the gradients aren't punishing and there's water to watch if concentration starts flagging. History buffs won't find much to grip them here. The real draw is simple: trees, quiet, and a chance to stretch your legs without fighting crowds.
