Cocklick Hill

The walk up Cocklick Hill isn't long, but it's steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs by the time you reach the summit. From Skipton, it's an easy drive out to the trailhead, and within an hour you're standing at the top looking across the Yorkshire moorland with a proper sense of achievement despite the modest altitude.

What makes this worthwhile is the 360-degree view. On a clear day you can see for miles - the Pennines rolling away in one direction, farmland and small villages scattered across the valleys below. It's the kind of spot where you understand why people walk in Yorkshire rather than just talk about it.

The terrain is rough moorland grass and stone, so decent boots matter. It's free to access, as these hills tend to be, and you can knock the whole thing over in two hours if you're fit. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the final push a bit much. Walkers who know the area already will appreciate the relatively quiet approach compared to some of the more famous peaks nearby.

If you're staying at Woodsworth Exploring - just under six miles away - it's the sort of half-day mission that breaks up a longer holiday well. Not a destination in itself, but definitely worth adding to your itinerary if you're in the Skipton area. Go when the weather's decent; cloud cover at the top kills much of the appeal.
