Cocked Hat Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside York, Cocked Hat Wood feels like the sort of place locals know about and tourists miss entirely. The trees are dense enough that you lose the sound of the road within minutes, and there's a genuine sense of stepping away from things. It's mixed woodland - oak, beech, the usual suspects - with a decent network of paths that don't require serious navigation skills but do reward a bit of wandering.

The main appeal here is straightforward: quiet. On a weekday morning you might have the place to yourself. Families will find it manageable for younger kids, though there's not much in the way of facilities or dramatic viewpoints, so don't expect them to stay entertained for hours. Dog walkers absolutely love it. The paths are easy underfoot most of the time, and it's the kind of wood where you can actually see where you're going rather than battling through undergrowth.

Worth half a morning or a couple of hours, really. Could easily be combined with Bugthorpe Grange Glamping if you're staying in the area - it's close enough to pop over for a walk before heading back to settle in. There's no visitor centre or tearoom, so bring what you need. Free access as far as anyone can tell, and open year-round, though late autumn through early spring is probably the best time: fewer midges and the woodland floor is properly visible.
