Cobhill Rough

The Forest of Dean sprawls across this corner of Gloucestershire, and Cobhill Rough is where things get properly wild. It's a working woodland - no manicured paths or visitor centres, just trees, bracken, and the kind of quiet you don't get near towns. You can walk through it, which plenty of locals do, though there's no formal trail network to speak of.

This is for people who like their forests actual forests. If you're expecting a playground or a café, you'll be disappointed. But if you're after a proper walk from nearby Newent without the crowds of the main Dean attractions, it delivers. The woodland changes with the seasons - spring brings a green chaos, autumn turns it bronze and gold. It's the sort of place where you notice things: birdsong, the smell of damp earth, how the light filters through.

Stay at one of the local parks - Pelerine or Haywood Farm are both within reach - and you've got yourself a genuine forest experience rather than a theme park version. You'll need decent boots, especially after rain, and an hour or two depending on how far you fancy walking. No entry fee, no restrictions that anyone seems to enforce. It's just there, ancient and indifferent to whether tourists show up.

Won't suit families after an afternoon's entertainment, and it's not a destination in itself. But as part of exploring the Dean properly, treating it like somewhere you live rather than somewhere you tick off, it's excellent.
