Cobdean Wood

Walk far enough into Cobdean Wood and you'll forget Dover's only a few miles away. It's a proper woodland - the sort where sunlight filters through beech and oak, and the floor crunches underfoot with leaves and fallen branches. The paths wind through without much fuss, and there's genuine peace to be had if you time it right and avoid weekends.

This is woodland for people who actually like walking through woodland. Not a theme park version with themed trails and interpretation boards - just trees, quiet, and the occasional dog walker. History buffs might appreciate that it's old land, though there's little in the way of monuments or ruins to anchor that interest. Families with young children could manage an hour or so, but if your lot demands destination drama, they'll get restless.

The nearest proper town is Dover, which makes Cobdean more of a detour than a main event. That said, if you're staying at Hawthorn Farm Holiday Park - a solid choice by all accounts - and fancy a leg-stretching walk away from the caravan park, it's well within reach at under seven miles. The woodland works as a morning outing before heading elsewhere, rather than a reason to plan your entire day around it. Go when the weather's dry; the paths aren't maintained to motorway standards, and mud happens.
