Cobbs Quay Marina

The waterfront at Cobbs Quay is where Poole's sailing crowd actually hangs out - moored boats bobbing against the Dorset sky, proper working marina atmosphere rather than a theme park version of one. You'll see serious yachts alongside dinghies, the sort of place where people are genuinely getting ready to head out rather than posing for photos.

Walking the quayside is free and takes about half an hour if you're not rushing. The real draw is watching the boats and the water - it's calming in the way only a functioning marina can be. There are cafes dotted around where you can grab a coffee and actually sit facing the boats rather than a car park. The smell of salt and diesel, the clink of rigging, fishermen working their nets - it's all proper maritime, not sanitised.

Families won't find organised activities, but older kids who like boats will happily spend an hour here. It's not a destination by itself unless you're into sailing, but if you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Sandford just down the road - about three miles away - it's an easy half-day excursion that breaks up the holiday park routine without needing entertainment laid on.

Go early morning if you want the quietest experience. The afternoon brings proper foot traffic, which some find atmospheric and others find crowded. Winter's actually better than summer for that reason. No admission charges, no opening times to worry about - you simply turn up to the waterfront whenever suits you.
