Coate Water Country Park

The lake at Coate Water sits on the edge of Swindon like something the town forgot to develop. It's proper worth a morning if you're staying anywhere nearby - the water's the main draw, ringed by grass that slopes down invitingly, and there's a walking path that takes you round the whole thing without breaking a sweat.

What you get is straightforward countryside: reeds, waterfowl, the occasional fisherman standing stock still for hours. Families with young kids will manage an hour here easily, maybe two if you pack a picnic and let them burn off steam by the water's edge. The walking crowd will find it decent enough for a leg-stretch between bigger things, though don't expect drama - it's gentle.

There's a small visitor centre if the weather turns, though calling it unmissable would be overselling it. The real point is the space itself. If you're glam camping at Nordic Glamping at Botswicky - only four miles from here - this makes a convenient late-afternoon leg-stretch before dinner, or a quiet morning walk before heading out for the day.

Free to wander, open year-round as far as I can tell, and the car park's straightforward. Spring's nicest when the birds are nesting, but honestly any clear day works. Just don't come expecting lakes-district drama - this is Wiltshire doing flat and functional, and somehow that's its charm.
