Coal Pit Wood

Coal Pit Wood sits just outside Ripon, a proper woodland walk that doesn't pretend to be anything grander than it is. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, the trees are tall enough to make you forget you're five minutes from town, and there's a genuine sense of peace once you're in among the conifers and broadleaf mix.

It's a straightforward woodland jaunt rather than a destination with bells and whistles. You're looking at an hour or so if you potter about, maybe ninety minutes if you take the longer trails. There are paths through the trees, the light filters through nicely in spring and summer, and it's the sort of place where you might actually see deer if you're quiet enough. Dog walkers love it, and families find it less exhausting than some of the fells nearby.

The real value here is proximity. If you're based at Woodhouse Farm Holiday Park just down the road, or Riverside Meadows a few miles out, this is your local woodland for an easy morning walk without needing to load the car. It won't take your breath away like some of Yorkshire's bigger attractions, but that's not the point. It's genuinely good for stretching your legs when you want something low-key, and the forest canopy is thick enough to be pleasant even on a drizzly day. Worth the walk? Only if you're in the area and fancy some quiet among the trees.
