Coade Stone Lion

There's a rather splendid golden lion sitting on a plinth near Loughborough, and it's made from something called Coade stone - a material that's genuinely fascinating once you start looking into it. This isn't your typical park sculpture. Coade stone was an artificial stone developed in the 18th century, incredibly durable and detailed, and this particular lion has been weathering the Nottinghamshire elements for centuries without crumbling into dust.

The lion itself is a proper bit of craftsmanship. Up close, you can see the texture and expression carved into the face, the muscles suggested through the stone. It's the sort of thing that makes you pause and think about how they managed such precision work back then. The setting is fairly low-key - it's not surrounded by visitor facilities or elaborate interpretation boards. You'll need to know roughly where you're going, or you might walk straight past it.

History enthusiasts will find it genuinely rewarding, and photographers won't leave disappointed. Kids will manage a few minutes of interest before wanting to move on, unless they're already keen on industrial heritage. It works best as a detour during a broader exploration of the area rather than a destination in itself.

If you're based at Midshires Way Campsite and Alpaca Farm or the Wolds Wine Estate, both within easy reach, the lion makes a pleasant walk-break. No charge that I'm aware of, and you can visit any time - there's no gate or entry restriction. Allow fifteen minutes or so to properly appreciate it.
