Cnwch Bank Reserve (Radnorshire Wildlife Trust)

The Radnorshire Wildlife Trust runs this modest reserve near Knighton, and it's the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick tick-off. Cnwch Bank sits in that borderlands landscape where Shropshire and Wales blur together - you get open grassland, scrubby woodland, and enough wildflower patches to keep botanists genuinely occupied. The whole reserve is small enough that you won't need more than an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're taking photos or actually stopping to look at things.

It's walkers who'll get the most from this. There are paths that meander through, and if you're staying at Black Hall Lodges nearby, it's a proper excuse to get out of the lodge for an afternoon without committing to a full day's expedition. The grassland attracts birds you might not see in your garden - lapwings, skylarks, the occasional redstart - and the wildflower season (late spring through summer) is genuinely worth planning around.

Families with young kids might find an hour quite enough before boredom sets in. It's not a petting farm or anything with obvious entertainment value. What it is, though, is genuine habitat work - the Trust manages it for wildlife, not for visitor amenities. That's actually rather refreshing. No gift shop nonsense, no entry fees as far as I can tell. Just park near Knighton and walk in. It's the sort of place that makes sense as part of a wider Shropshire walking holiday rather than a destination in itself.
