Cnoc na Bò Ruaidhe

The walk up Cnoc na Bò Ruaidhe isn't long, but it's steep enough to make you feel properly earned your summit views. This modest peak on the Isle of Mull rises to just over 300 metres, yet from the top you're looking out across the Firth of Lorn towards Ben Buachaille and the broader Mull landscape beyond. The terrain is moorland - rough grass and the occasional boggy patch - nothing technical but wear decent boots because it gets soggy up there. Reckon on about an hour round trip from the base depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. History buffs might appreciate the name itself, which translates to "the red cow's knoll" - one of those Hebridean titles that hints at old grazing routes and herding stories lost to time. This is proper walker's country rather than a destination in itself. Most people combine it with other Mull activities or pair it with the nearby Port nan Gael Campsite, which is excellent for a base if you're doing multiple peaks in the area. The Isle of Mull town serves as your nearest spot for supplies, and the mainland feels a world away once you're up there. Go on a clear day - the views are the whole point, and cloud cover reduces it to a moorland slog. Families with active teenagers will manage it fine; younger kids might find the ascent a bit much.
