Cnoc Breac

The walk up Cnoc Breac from Tarbert takes you straight into proper hill country without the pretension. It's not a massive undertaking - you're looking at a couple of hours there and back - but it gives you exactly what you'd want: wide views across Loch Fyne and into the Cowal Peninsula. The path isn't fussy. You'll gain height steadily through scrub and moorland, with the loch spreading out below as you climb. On a clear day you can see all the way down to Skipness Castle and beyond. On a grey day, which is more likely in Argyll, it's moody and atmospheric in the way these Scottish hills do so well. This is one for walkers rather than casual strollers. The terrain is rough in patches and there's no manicured route - bring proper boots and be ready for bog. Children who've done a few hills before will manage it fine. Younger ones will probably find it heavy going. The nearest base is Port Ban Holiday Park just two miles away, which makes this a natural inclusion if you're staying in the area. Start early to catch the light, particularly in autumn when the whole thing has a bit more drama to it. There's nothing much at the top itself - no cairn, no shelter, no café - but that's rather the point. You get the view, you turn around, you head back down. Straightforward. Honest. No faffing about.
