Cnapan Nathraichean

The walk up Cnapan Nathraichean from Ballater is one of those Scottish hill outings that rewards you without demanding your entire day. The peak itself sits at a modest height, making it accessible for anyone with decent boots and a bit of stamina - not a slog, but a proper climb all the same.

What you get at the top is the real draw: views across the Dee Valley that stretch for miles, with the Cairngorms rising up in the distance like some ancient fortress. On a clear day it's spectacular. On a misty one, well, you're in Scotland - that's half the charm.

Families with older kids will manage this fine. Younger ones might find the walk tedious without the promise of ice cream in Ballater afterwards. Serious hillwalkers could knock this out as a warm-up before tackling something bigger in the area. The terrain is typical Highlands - bracken, heather, rough grass - so ankle support matters.

If you're camped at Braemar Caravan Park just down the road, this makes an excellent morning or afternoon outing. Allow two to three hours depending on fitness and how long you linger at the summit. There's no admission fee - it's open hillside. The best light comes in late afternoon, when you can watch the shadows move across the valleys below.

Not one for a quick snap and move on. But if you've got time and proper weather, it's genuinely worth the detour.
