Close Park

Close Park is a small nature reserve on the outskirts of Bury, Lancashire - the sort of place you'd stumble upon rather than specifically plan for, which honestly adds to its charm. It's a working woodland and meadow reserve where you can expect to spot birds, insects, and the occasional fox if you're lucky enough and quiet enough. The walking trails are gentle, mostly flat, and take between thirty minutes and an hour depending on how keen you are on spotting wildlife.

This isn't a destination that'll eat up a whole day, and it's not trying to be. What makes it worthwhile is that it feels properly local - minimal signage, no gift shop, no crowds of school trips. Families with young kids will manage the paths easily, though there's not much to actively do beyond walking and observing. Birders and amateur naturalists will find it far more rewarding than those expecting facilities.

If you're based at Burrs Country Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road, Close Park makes for a decent morning walk before heading into Bury proper. It's free, as far as I can tell, though opening times aren't clearly advertised - treat it as a dawn-to-dusk sort of place. The reserve works hard to maintain habitats, so stick to marked paths and leave it as you find it. Proper Lancashire countryside, unglamorous but genuine.
