Clifford's Hill

The walk up Clifford's Hill near Devizes rewards you with proper views across the Wiltshire countryside - the sort of landscape that rolls on forever under big skies. It's not a mountain, mind you. More of a decent climb that takes perhaps twenty minutes from the base, depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. The summit itself is modest but the panorama isn't. On clear days you can pick out the chalk white of the Salisbury Plain stretching away.

Who's this for? Walkers, absolutely. Families with kids who've got some legs on them will find it manageable, though younger children might need a hand on the steeper bits. History enthusiasts get something too - there's Bronze Age earthworks up there if you know what you're looking at. Don't expect interpretation boards or facilities. This is proper countryside walking, no frills.

It's free to access and works brilliantly as part of a broader walking loop around Devizes rather than a destination in itself. Combine it with the canal towpaths - the town's got good access to the Kennet and Avon - and you've got a solid day's exploration. If you're based at one of the nearby parks like Little Owls or Honey Bee Glamping, it's an easy morning jaunt that won't eat into your whole day. Go in dry conditions; wet grass on the slopes gets slippery fast. Expect to spend an hour including the walk up, time at the top, and the descent.
