Clevelode Rough

Dense woodland carpets the slopes here, creating one of those proper ancient forests that feels miles from anywhere despite sitting close to Malvern. Clevelode Rough spreads across steep hillsides with well-worn paths threading between oak, ash and birch trees that have stood for centuries.

Walkers get the best of this place, especially those who fancy a bit of uphill work without the crowds you'll find on the Malvern Hills proper. The paths can be muddy after rain and some sections are quite steep, so decent boots are essential. Families with younger children might struggle with the terrain - this isn't pushchair territory.

Birdwatchers love it here. The mix of mature trees and undergrowth attracts everything from woodpeckers to nuthatches, and the relative quiet means you actually hear them. Spring brings bluebells and wild garlic, though the tree cover means it's never as showy as more open woodland.

Allow two to three hours for a proper explore, though you could easily spend longer if you're into wildlife photography. It's free to wander, and there's no set opening times - just park sensibly on nearby lanes.

For those staying at Riverside Caravan Park or the other sites around Malvern, it makes a decent alternative when the main hills are packed with weekend walkers. Much quieter, though perhaps not quite as rewarding for the views.
